Green revolution and its consequences…

In the 1960s there was a concern that India would not be able to grow sufficient food to feed its huge population. So after several discussions, Govt. of India decided to push the country under Green revolution.

As Norman Borlaug, an American agronomist and the father of Green revolution was successful to show the world its huge capability of growing large amount of food  in a short span of time, GOI was willing to go through the same experiment. They promised that situation of farmer will be much better and this revolution is especially for Farmers…

Now let’s discuss judiciously what this so called revolution has actually done here…

Farmers were provided High Yielding High Breed seed. Advantages of these seeds, as its name says-

  1. Yield is high
  2. It takes less time.

Now, If we compare HYHB plant with Deshi plant we see that-

HYHB PlantDeshi Plant
Take less timeTake more time
As it takes less time, length of this plant remain shortBy same reason height of this plant is more.

And we know that growth of branches of a plant is directly proportional to its growth of root. So it’s very obvious that root of Deshi plant is more developed that that of HYHB plant. Therefore there is no doubt that because root is less developed its immunity will be less. Now compare:

HYHB PlantDeshi Plant
Root is less developedRoot is more developed
Immunity is lessImmunity is higher
Comply to add pesticideLess susceptible to pest
Minerals intake is lessHere it is higher
Fertilizers have to be added from outsideNot needed

So It is very obvious that with Green revolution and use of HYHB plant two more industries have emerged:

Fertilizer Industry and Pesticide Industry.

By using fertilizers years after years one more significant problem has arised. That is soil cementation. And by that farmers can’t plough their land by conventional method. So they are forced to use tractors like heavy machines.
Ironically, using such heavy equipments  leads to more hardening of soil.

Not only that, water retention capacity of land is also going down, consequently soil texture is becoming poor.

Foremost pesticide is the death knell of earthworms which are generally referred as Farmer’s Friend. With the body waste of these natural ploughmen soil becomes more fertile. But by using pesticide soil health is again reducing.

And last but not the least, germination period of HYHB seed is just one year. That is why farmers cannot use their own seed in the very next year as they used to do with their Deshi seeds. Now farmers are forced to use new seed every year.
Sad but true story is that now it is next to impossible to get those primeval deshi seeds. Result of MNC’s syndicate.

Hence from the above discussion it is all clear that use of HYHB plant is a bizzare experiment for farmers and a full proof plan of MNCs.

Now Let’s discuss who consumes this food:

For example, as the price of Govindobhog, Basmati, Dehradun etc types of rice (which are Deshi seed) is high, poor can’t afford these.
On the contrary they are forced to take low priced HYHB seeds, whese are filled with fertilizers and pesticides. Consequently poor farmers are getting more fragile to several life taking diseases easily.
And one more industry is developing from here:

Medicine Industry

Thereafter, there is no doubt that owner of these industries are obviously from rich background..

Hence the real question arises…..

Whom for the green Revolution Actually is!!!!!

Let the thought process sink deep…
